Northampton, Mass. Fencing started off its 2006-07 season with an opening invitational at Smith College. The NEIFC/NEWIFA Invitational is known as "The Big One" by fencers, and is the traditional start of the collegiate fencing season.
BC placed finalists in five of six events at the New England Fall Invitational on November 4. For the men's team, Junior Andrew Faubel was a surprise medalist, finishing third out of 61 fencers.
Faubel is returning to epee this season after spending last year as a fencing sabre, and the increased speed and aggressiveness he gained is paying off.
Sophomore Ian Griswold earned a bronze in men's sabre. Junior Sean Hickey placed sixth in men's foil, while freshmen Andrew Shirman placed tenth in the same event.
The women had some noteworthy performances of their own. Freshman Deanna Rakowsky was seventh in women's foil, while Freshman Heather Ciganek earned a bronze for the women's team in the epee event.
