Newton, Mass.--The fourth-ranked Boston College field hockey team fell to the sixth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels Saturday afternoon on the Newton Campus Field, 4-0. Boston College drops to 11-3 overall and 2-2 in ACC play while UNC picks up its first ACC victory, 1-3, and improves to 10-4 overall.
The Tar Heels got on the scoreboard first in the fourth minute when Britt van Beek carried the ball in the circle and flipped the ball high past sophomore goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz from right in front of the net. The score remained 1-0 through the end of the first half with UNC having the edge in shots, 7-5.
The Eagles came out strong in the second half, but could not put the ball in the goal. Boston College had two goals taken back in the second half, including one with 29:05 still remaining when freshman Chelsey Feole drag-flicked a hard shot into the cage and also one in the final two minutes of play when junior Crystal Frates beat Tar Heel goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell.
UNC was able to put their shots past Berkowitz, though, scoring three times in the second half to put away the win. At 49:53, Danielle Forword deflected a high ball floating inside the circle into the net. Nine minutes later, Alli Tanner bounced a hard ground ball off of a Boston College defender's foot for a goal and the 3-0 lead. Jesse Gey capped off the scoring at 63:11 when she one-timed Forword's shot on goal that rebounded back into play.
Berkowitz, an ACC Co-Player of the Week last week, made six saves in the game, while her counterpart, O'Donnell, made eight saves and picked up her second consecutive shutout. Both teams had six penalty corner opportunities and the Tar Heels had the slight advantage on shots, 17-15.
The Eagles take a week's break before traveling to Orono to face the Maine Black Bears next Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
