Orono, Maine--Junior Crystal Frates and sophomore Bob Dirks both scored for Boston College as sixth-ranked field hockey won a non-conference game, 2-0, over an America East team, University of Maine, in Orono Sunday afternoon. The goals are Frates' and Dirks' 11th and 13th of the season, respectively.
The Eagles boost their record to 12-3 in their only game of the week. Maine drops to 6-9 on the season.
Despite out-shooting the Black Bears, 6-0, and having three penalty corner opportunities to Maine's none in the first frame, the Eagles could not pocket the ball in the net. While the offense struggled, the defense protected sophomore goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz well and did not give up a shot. On the other side of the field, Maine's Rebecca Giroux made four saves before halftime.
The first goal of the game came at 41:20 when Frates won a scramble in front of Maine's cage and placed the loose ball behind Giroux. For insurance, Dirks received the ball from senior Caitlin Gillen and took a long, hard shot from the top of circle which found the back of the net at 55:50 and gave the Eagles the 2-0 lead.
The Eagles outshot the Black Bears, 15-2, for the game and had eight penalty corners to Maine's two. Berkowitz made two saves while Giroux tallied eight saves in the match.
"We dominated the game in the first half, but we just didn't drop the ball in the net. Overall, we realistically played a stronger second half," head coach Ainslee Lamb says. "The biggest part of this game was only giving up two shots to Maine. Only giving up two shots is a big accomplishment for our defense."
Boston College will play local rival Harvard University on Wednesday evening on the Crimson's Jordan Field. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
