Chapel Hill, N.C. - A balanced offensive attack that saw three players reach double-digits in kills, powered North Carolina past the Eagles, 30-27, 30-25, 30-25, at Carmichael Auditorium Saturday night. With the loss the Eagles fall to 5-6 in conference play while Carolina improves to 4-7.
BC jumped out to an early game one lead building a five-point advantage at 13-8. The Tar Heels were quick to respond, though, as they went on a 9-2 run to bring the score to 17-15, claiming their first lead of the frame in the process. A quick burst by Boston College would knot the score at 20, and the teams traded points until a string of errors by the Eagles gave UNC the space it needed to eventually take the 30-27 win.
Game two again saw BC play well early as they built an 8-2 lead. But, strong serving helped the Tar Heels claw back and after successive kills by senior Amy Beaver, UNC took its first lead at 19-18. Trailing 24-22, the Eagles were unable to cut the deficit as UNC would close out the game winning six of the next nine points for a 30-25 victory.
It was Carolina that grabbed a 4-1 lead early in game three, but the Eagles rallied and the score remained tight halfway through the contest. But, a balanced UNC attack would prove too much for BC as the Tar Heels seized control of the match with an 11-3 run that put them up 25-16 and they would close out the Eagles, 30-25, for the three game sweep.
North Carolina was led by freshman Megan Owens who had a match-high 13 kills, while sophomore Lauren Prussing and senior Amy Beaver each posted 11.
Senior Dorota Niemczewska posted 12 kills and junior Kelsey Johnson added 11 to lead the way on offense for the Eagles. Senior Allison Anderson again was solid tallying a match-high 30 digs.
The Eagles will look to bounce back as they take on Florida State, Friday, October 27 at 8:00 p.m. in Power gym.
