Junior forward Charlie Davies scored two goals and assisted on the third to lead Boston College to a 3-1 conference victory over second-ranked and defending national champion Maryland before 6,214 fans in College Park, Md., on Saturday night.
Davies, the ACC leader in goals and points entering the match, recorded his 13th and 14th scores of the season, tying then snapping BC's 36-year old single-season record formerly set by Charlie Mundhenk in 1970.
The Manchester, N.H., native, tallied his first goal of the game just more than two minutes into the match to give the visiting Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Senior Jamen Amato and sophomore Stephen Hepburn assisted on the score.
Maryland (10-3-1, 3-3-1 ACC) evened the score when Graham Zusi converted on a penalty kick in the 37th minute after BC defender Jamie Melas was whistled for a hand ball inside the 18-yard box. Maryland had fired a shot toward the goal that caromed off Melas' left shoulder.
Davies then tallied his second goal of the match -- his fifth multiple-goal game of the season -- when he converted a penalty kick at 51:44 to establish the school record. Led with a through ball from Greg O'Neil, Davies was tackled by Maryland goalkeeper Chris Seitz inside the box and was awarded a penalty shot. Seitz was served a red card and Maryland played down one player for the remaining 38:16 of the match.
Junior goalkeeper Chris Brown, who had guessed correctly on Maryland's first penalty shot but did not redirect the ball to make the save, dove to his right and saved Maryland's second penalty-shot opportunity in the 58th minute. The loose rebound was missed just to the left of the goal post.
Freshman forward Mor Avi Hanan concluded the scoring when blasted home an insurance goal -- his fourth of the season -- with his left foot on a breakaway. Avi Hanan was on the receiving end of a crossing pass from sophomore Ryan Sherman, who was fed by Davies.
Brown finished with three saves to earn his third collegiate victory. Neither Seitz nor backup goalkeeper Josh Mikulewicx recorded a save for the Terrapins.
BC (7-5-1, 3-2-1 ACC), which averaged a league-high 17.1 shots per game entering Saturday's match, out shot Maryland, 10-7.
Next, Boston College travels to Dartmouth on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Game time is 3 p.m.
