
No. 7 Field Hockey Rolls Past The Mountaineers

Durham, N.C.--The Boston College field hockey team followed up Saturday's ACC upset win by easily handling Appalachian State, 9-0, in Durham, N.C. on Sunday. The Eagles now have a 10-2 overall record and the Mountaineers remain winless at 0-9. Seven different Eagles found the back of the cage for goals, including two each from sophomores Bob Dirks and Kelley Smith.
Junior Crystal Frates got the ball rolling in the second minute of play when she knocked in her ninth goal of the season after receiving a pass from freshman Caitlin McGovern. Eight minutes later, Dirks successfully placed a penalty shot past Mountaineer goalie Mikayla Paulson to give the Eagles the 2-0 lead. At 28:46, junior Brenna Leahy took advantage of a penalty corner with a goal, assisted by Frates and senior Amanda Chase. McGovern closed out the scoring in the first half with an unassisted goal at 33:21.
The Eagles continued their attack with three unassisted goals, including one from Dirks and two from Smith, her first and second season goals. At 60:58, senior Lauren Parks converted on a penalty corner with help from senior Caitlin Gillen and sophomore Katie Quaglia, who both picked up the assists. Gillen also got credit for senior Mary DeFilippo's first goal of the season which closed out the scoring in the 65th minute.
Boston College did not allow Appalachian State a penalty corner opportunity in the match, but the Mountaineers handed the Eagles 14 opportunities. The Eagles led the Mountaineers in the shots column, 30-5.
Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz allowed no goals, recorded her fourth shutout of the season, and stopped four shots on net. Paulson let up six goals in her 51:18 of play and made 11 saves before being relieved by Sabra Holt. Holt finished her nineteen minutes in the cage with three saves and three goals against.
The Eagles continue their road trip on Wednesday against Providence at 7:00 p.m.
