Boston, Mass. - The Eagles traveled to cross-town rival Boston University as they matched up against the Terriers for the second time in as many days. BC ended the hard fought game with a 2-1 victory. BC has now won seven games in a row and remains on top of the Hockey East standings with a 12-2-1 conference record and an overall record of 13-7-4.
The game started off the same way the two teams left it yesterday, with aggressive strong play. Both teams were scrappy as they battled for every puck and every possession. The Eagles managed to get nine shots on goal but freshman BU goalie Allyse Wilcox led the Terriers' defense stopping every shot. Senior captain Alison Quandt tallied five saves in the period as both teams entered the second period scoreless.
In the second period, the physical play continued on both sides as the Eagles dominated control of the puck in the Terrier's end. Finally at 10:17, freshman Stephanie Olchowski ripped a slap shot past Wilcox to put the Eagles up, 1-0. This was Olchowski's first goal of the season and fourth collegiate point. Senior Jill McInnis assisted on the goal for her second assist of the season.
Shortly after the goal, on a BU breakaway, Quandt made a key save to preserve the Eagles' lead. The Eagles' scoring drive continued as freshman defense Maggie Taverna scored a power-play goal at 15:17 to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Sarah Feldman and freshman Becky Zavisza assisted on the goal. This marked Taverna's fifth goal of the season. The Eagles continued to pepper Wilcox with shots for the rest of the period but would not score again before the end of the period as the Eagles remained on top by two.
The third period continued much like the previous two before with a battle ensuing for every puck. The Terriers who would not be shutout scored at 14:13 in the third period as Nicki Wiart scored her eighth goal of the season from Gina Kearns to put the Terriers within one.
With five minutes remaining the Eagles defended their 2-1 lead. The Terriers seemed to gain a newfound momentum after their goal but the Eagles battled as well and the Eagles' defense would not let BU score again.
Quandt ended the afternoon with 18 saves and has now recorded 18 or more saves in eight of the last nine games she has played in. Wilcox tallied 24 saves on the night.
The Eagles take a break from Hockey East as they take on No. 5 Mercyhurst at home next Saturday at Kelley Rink. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
