Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles continued the win-streak they started last week as they hosted the Northeastern University Huskies on Tuesday night for the second time this season. The Eagles took their fifth straight Hockey East win as they defeated the Huskies by a score of, 2-1. Leading scorer Deborah Spillane led the team with two points but sophomore defense Erin Blood scored her first goal of the season and the eventual gamewinner at 8:04 in the second period.
The first period was a battle of defenses as both teams were held scoreless through the first 20 minutes. Senior co-captain Alison Quandt made some key saves in the first period, stopping all seven shots she faced. Northeastern goalie Marisa Hourihan also stopped everything BC threw her way. Hourihan ended the first period with nine saves as the teams left the ice tied at zero.
The Eagles opened up scoring in the second period at 1:21 as sophomore Deborah Spillane scored her 13th goal of the season on a passes by classmates Cristin Stuart and Colleen Harris. This marked Spillane's fifth goal in six games and Harris' third point in three games. Seven minutes later, Blood scored her first goal of the season on an assist set up by Spillane and sophomore Sarah Feldman. Quandt held on to the shut out despite her team being riddled with penalties, putting the Huskies in a power-play situation. The Huskies went 0-7 on the night on the power play while the Eagles went 1-4.
But the Huskies would not be easily defeated as freshman Ali Bielawski scored her fourth goal of the season at 10:20 in the third period. Despite their best efforts at a comeback late in the third, the Huskies ran out of time.
Quandt finished the night with 25 saves while Hourihan ended with 20.
After tough play on both sides, the Eagles held on to their 2-1 lead to take the game from the Huskies and continue to stay atop the Hockey East. Boston College now leads New Hampshire by four points in the standings.
The Eagles stand at 11-7-4 overall and 10-2-1 in conference play. BC stays at home on Saturday, Jan 21, as they take on cross-town rival Boston University at 2 p.m.
