Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles opened up a two-game set against Boston University with a win on Saturday afternoon at home in Chestnut Hill. The Eagles battled with the Terriers to a final score of 5-2. BC has now won six games in a row and remains on top of the Hockey East standings with an 11-2-1 conference record and an overall record of 12-7-4.
The Eagles opened scoring at 6:10 in the first period as sophomore Sarah Feldman scored her 10th goal of the season off of passes by sophomore Deborah Spillane and freshman Becky Zavisza on the power play. Two minutes later Zavisza would tally her second point of the night as she scored an unassisted goal to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. The Terriers would not be shutout and answered right back as junior Cara Hendry put the puck past goalie Alison Quandt at 10:29 for her seventh goal of the season on a pass by freshman Laurel Koller. The scoring would not end there as senior Nancy Gillis notched her second goal of the season at 17:27 to put the Eagles up 3-1 going into the second period.
In the second, the Eagles scored the lone goal of the period as Feldman notched her second power-play goal of the game on a pass by classmate Colleen Harris at 8:04. Both teams had plenty of power-play opportunities, but only BC was able to capitalize.
In the third period, amidst nine penalties between the two teams, both managed to get on the scoreboard. Senior Jill McInnis scored a short-handed goal at 4:15 in the third with Zavisza being credited with the assist. McInnis is only one of four Eagles to score a short-handed goal this season. At 15:23 leading BU scorer Laurel Koller notched her 11th goal of the season on the power-play. Despite the last minute efforts by BU, the Eagles took the win by a final score of 5-2.
BU goaltender freshman Allyse Wilcox ended the afternoon with 11 saves. Freshman Karilyn Pilch came into the game in the third in relief of Wilcox and ended the game with 10 saves.
Quandt recorded 21 saves in the win. Quandt has recorded 19 or more saves in seven out of the last eight games she has played in.
The Eagles continue Hockey East play as they take on the Terriers again at Walter Brown Arena at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
