Eagles Fall to Miami 3-0

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles dropped a tough home opener to a strong Miami team 3-0 and looks to rebound as they play their third ACC match this week and take onFlorida State on Saturday night.
The Eagles now 0-2 in conference play and 5-6 overall opened league play at home in power gym without their leading attacker Dorota Niemczewska. Niemczewska who was hurt in the first ACC match of the year against Maryland had to sit out the entire match. Sophomore Kelsey Johnson would eventually lead the team in kills with 12 on the night. Junior Morgan Woodcock was second in kill tallies on the evening with nine and adding three blocks.
Co-captain Allison Anderson had a strong night at libero digging 19 balls and adding one service ace. Senior setter Verena Rost had 23 assists and added seven digs on the evening.
While the first two games were close, the Hurricanes drew large leads near the end of each game to close out the games out 30-24 and 30-23. The third game was much closer and despite being down two games the Eagles would not go out quietly. They fought back and won four straight points to make it 30-29, game point BC, but Miami also was not prepared to give up. The Hurricanes would come back and finish off an exciting game 32-30.
Both freshmen for the Eagles played well as outside hitter Tori Thompson tallied eight kills on the night and 12 digs. Freshmen setter Brittany Pierpont had three kills in the match, 12 assists and five digs.
The Eagles take on the Florida State Seminoles on Sept. 24, 2005 at 7 p.m. at home in Power Gym. The Seminoles play Maryland on Friday night and will play the Eagles for the first time ever.
