Senior quarterback Quinton Porter completed 5-of-10 passes for 71 yards and one touchdown and sophomore running back L.V. Whitworth rushed for 52 yards on 10 carries in Boston College's first preseason scrimmage Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.
Whitworth set up Porter's 42-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jason Lilly with a 27-yard run in the opening series of downs.
Sophomore wide receiver Kevin Challenger caught two passes for 48 yards and one touchdown - a 33-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Matt Ryan - and junior Tony Gonzalez caught three passes for 34 yards.
Ryan completed 9-of-12 attempts for 110 yards on the day.
"It's a starting point, but we've got to get much better if we want to be a good football team," head coach Tom O'Brien said. "A little more enthusiasm would have suited me. I think the heat this morning took something out of them."
Junior running back Survival Ross carried the ball 12 times for 40 yards while sophomore Mike Makinde rushed for 28 yards on 13 carries.
The scrimmage also featured strong defensive efforts by junior Antonio Valverde, sophomore defensive tackle B.J. Raji and freshman Mike McLaughlin, who recorded one forced fumble and one interception.
Sophomore place-kicker Ryan Ohliger connected on field goals from 36 and 42 yards. A 27-yard attempt missed wide left.
The Eagles will scrimmage again Wednesday in preparation for the season opener at BYU on Sept. 3.
