Three Boston College baseball players were selected in the first day of the 2005 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, held on June 7. In the seventh round, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays took left-handed pitcher Mike Wlodarczyk (Medford, N.J.), the 208th overall pick in the draft. In the 12th round, the Pittsburgh Pirates chose outfielder Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.), the 361st overall pick, and the San Francisco Giants selected right-handed pitcher Joe Martinez (South Orange, N.J.), the draft's 372nd overall pick.
Wlodarczyk finished the 2005 collegiate season with a 3.07 ERA, a 10-2 record, five complete games and 90 strikeouts in 85.0 innings. The seventh-round selection limited opposing hitters to a .262 batting average and led the Eagles' pitching staff with ten wins. One of his five complete games came in an 8-2 victory on April 9 over Big East champion Notre Dame. As one of the staff's two aces, Wlodarczyk captured All-Big East first-team honors and All-New England first-team honors.
Delaney was one of three players to start in all 57 games in 2005. He collected a .354 batting average, 209 hits, 12 doubles, a team-best nine home runs and a team-leading 48 RBI. The All-New England first-team selection led the Eagles with a .560 slugging percentage and 117 total bases and broke the school record for career hits with 263. This marked the second consecutive season in which Delaney earned All Big-East first-team honors.
Martinez, a unanimous selection to the All Big-East first team, led the Eagles with 96.0 innings pitched, 99 strikeouts, six complete games and two shutouts. The 12th-round pick boasted a .215 opponent batting average and a 9-3 record in 13 starts. Martinez, who captured All-New England first-team honors, threw four consecutive complete games spanning from April 9 through May 1 (all versus conference opponents). Over the four starts, Martinez allowed six earned runs and 25 hits while striking out 40 batters in 36 innings.
The 2005 draft marks the sixth consecutive year in which one or more Boston College baseball players have either been drafted or signed as a free agent with a Major League Baseball team. Last season, three Eagles were chosen on the first day of the draft.
