Another stellar pitching performance from senior Joe Martinez led Boston College over Pittsburgh, 3-0, in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Shea Field.
Martinez (8-2) tossed his fifth consecutive complete game and sixth of the season. The righthander scattered three hits over seven innings, throwing his second shutout of the season and lowering his team-best ERA to 2.30. Martinez also leads the Eagles with 90 strikeouts and 82.0 innings pitched.
The Eagles scored the game's first run in the top of the third. After Dave Preziosi and Ryan Hutchinson made the first two outs of the inning, senior Drew Locke singled to center field. Locke stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw by Pittsburgh catcher Jeff Stevens. Sophomore Jared McGuire singled through the left side to give BC the lead, 1-0.
BC put together an additional two runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Senior Tom Mackor, starting his first game since April 24, blasted a leadoff home run to left field to put the Eagles up two runs. Preziosi then extended his hitting streak to eight games with a line-drive single to left and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt down the first-base line by Hutchinson. Locke popped up to second to make the second out, but McGuire came through with a scorching single to center to make the score 3-0.
It was the 26th multiple-hit game of the season for McGuire (2-for-3), who leads the team with a .402 batting average.
