Boston College junior Nate Jeanes scattered four hits over seven innings of work, but the Eagles were able to muster just six hits in the second game of Monday's doubleheader against Pittsburgh, falling 6-1 to the Panthers at Shea Field.
Jeanes (2-5) struck out nine Pittsburgh batters while walking four. The southpaw allowed just one earned run.
The Panthers (24-17, 10-9) scored two runs without a hit in the top of the third. After Jeanes retired the first two Pittsburgh batters to begin the inning, he walked Ben Copeland and hit Jimmy Mayer with a pitch to put runners on first and second. Second baseman Jim Negrych grounded to Ryan Hutchinson at second, but the sophomore bobbled the ball and the bases were loaded.
Jeanes walked the next two hitters to stake the Panthers to an early 2-0 lead.
BC (34-16, 15-7) answered in the bottom half as sophomore Ryne Reynoso extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double to left-center field to lead off the inning. Senior Dave Preziosi sliced a single to left to knock in Reynoso, but was thrown out on a relay throw at second base.
Pittsburgh scored four more runs in the top of the eighth as David Cline blasted a three-run home run to left off BC reliever Terry Doyle.
Preziosi was 2-for-3 and sophomore Jared McGuire was 2-for-4. It was the 27th multiple-hit game of the season for McGuire.
Pittsburgh junior Shaun Butler (3-4) tossed his first complete game of the year, striking out three.
The Eagles are one victory shy of matching the school-record of 35 wins, set in 2000. BC returns to action when it hosts Marist on Wednesday, May 18 at 3:30.
