Freshman Terry Doyle struck out five batters over five innings of scoreless relief to lead Boston College to a doubleheader and series sweep of Big East rival Villanova, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Shea Field. The Eagles won the first game, 10-1.
Doyle (6-1) relieved starter Nate Jeanes with none out and runners on first and second in the top of the fifth. The righthander struck out Villanova third baseman Angelo Petracca and after walking cleanup hitter Jeremy Hunt, induced Alan Day to fly to left and struck out Robert Parks to end the threat.
Villanova (24-16-2, 7-11-1) scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single from catcher Andy Wendle.
The Eagles (31-14, 14-5) answered in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring three runs on four hits. Catcher Shawn McGill was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on shortstop Marco Albano's sacrifice bunt. Right fielder Mike Flynn doubled to left to score McGill and even the score, 1-1.
Designated hitter Ryne Reynoso drove a single to center field and the ball was misplayed by Day, allowing Flynn to score and Reynoso to advance to second. Sophomore Ryan Hutchinson singled to right center to bring Reynoso home, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
BC scratched an insurance run in the fifth.
Villanova outhit the Eagles, 8-6, but stranded 13 runners on the bases. The Wildcats also committed three errors in the game.
Jeanes scattered four hits in his four innings of action and didn't allow an earned run. He had three strikeouts.
Reynoso and Hutchinson each went 5-for-8 in the doubleheader.
