Boston College senior Drew Locke broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI double to left center as the Eagles defeated Northeastern, 10-7, at Friedman Diamond on Wednesday afternoon.
With one out in the inning, sophomore Pete Frates drew a walk and stole second base. Third baseman Jared Mcguire was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Jason Delaney. The senior flied to left field and with two outs, Locke drove a pitch deep into the left-center field gap, scoring Frates. McGuire advanced to third and later scored on a wild pitch, giving BC a 5-3 lead.
The Eagles scored two more runs in the sixth and another three in the seventh. Delaney tripled to deep center field to knock in McGuire, who had doubled to start the inning. Locke walked to put runners on at the corners and he and Delaney executed a double steal to score BC's second run of the inning. Locke later scored on Mike Flynn's sacrifice fly.
BC starting pitcher Terry Doyle gave up six hits and four runs in 6.1 innings of work. The freshman fanned four Northeastern batters in the longest outing of his career. He improves to 3-0 on the season.
The Eagles scored two runs in the top of the first to jump out to an early lead. After Dave Preziosi flied to center field to make the first out, McGuire singled through the left side and quickly stole second base. Delaney doubled to left center to knock in McGuire and then scored on Locke's line drive through the left side.
McGuire's steal was one of four swipes on the day for the Eagles. BC has now stolen 68 bags on the year - 12 more than all of last season.
The Northeast's second-ranked team has now won 19 of its last 22 games.
The Eagles continue Big East action this weekend when they host Notre Dame in Brockton's Campanelli Stadium.
