Senior Mike Wlodarczyk surrendered just two hits and one run in six innings of work, leading Boston College past Seton Hall, 8-2, in South Orange, N.J. on Sunday afternoon.
The southpaw allowed a single in the second and a home run in the fifth and that was all the Pirates could muster. Wlodarczyk (5-1) struck out nine batters en route to his team-leading fifth win of the season. The senior has fanned nine or more batters in three of his six starts this year. Opponents are batting just .209 off Wlodarczyk and he currently sports a 1.91 ERA.
The Eagles (16-6, 5-1) got on the board early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Senior first baseman Dave Preziosi, who saw his 14-game hitting streak snapped in Thursday's win over Rhode Island, registered one of his two hits on the day with a leadoff single.
With one out, sophomore Jared Mcguire singled to left, advancing Preziosi to third. After Jason Delaney struck out, senior Drew Locke and junior Shawn McGill hit two-out RBI singles to give BC the early lead.
McGuire was 3-for-5 and is hitting a team-high .439.
The score remained the same until the top of the fifth when Pete Frates led off the inning with a double to left center. Frates advanced to third on a fielder's interference call on an attempted pickoff play. He scored two batters later on a well-executed squeeze bunt by Preziosi to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Seton Hall's Anthony Seratelli hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the fifth to get the Pirates (6-14, 1-4) on the board. BC answered with two more in the sixth on an RBI double by Mike Flynn and a run-scoring single from Frates.
Seton Hall scored its second run in the seventh inning, and BC came back with three in the top of the eighth on four hits. Frates had a two-run single and Flynn an RBI single during the rally.
BC pounded out 15 hits on the way to their 16th win in 18 games. The Eagles are off to their best start in school history and are currently ranked third in the Northeast.
The Eagles and Pirates will hook up again tomorrow at Noon.
