Boston College senior Jason Delaney hit two home runs, including a three-run walk-off blast in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Eagles a 6-3 victory in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader sweep of Georgetown at Shea Field. BC won the second game, 10-4.
With the first game tied 3-3, Dave Preziosi and Drew Locke made two quick outs in the eighth inning. Sophomore Ryan Hutchinson singled through the left side and classmate Jared Mcguire singled to left to put runners on first and second for Delaney. The left fielder won the game with one swing of the bat, driving the game-winning shot over the right-center field wall.
Delaney also hit a solo home run in the fourth inning that gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
The Hoyas (20-21, 4-11) tied the game with two runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. Shortstop Matt Johnson led off with a double to right and with one out, advanced to third on Matt Bouchard's infield single. Parker Brooks followed with an RBI double that plated Johnson and Bouchard scored later in the inning on an error by BC shortstop Marco Albano.
BC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when McGuire blasted his fourth home run of the season to left center.
Senior Mike Wlodarczyk worked the eight-inning complete game for BC. The lefthander scattered eight hits and struck out five in his third consecutive complete game and fourth of the season. Wlodarczyk (8-1) surrendered just two earned runs and sports a team-leading ERA of 2.26.
The home runs were Delaney's third and fourth in the past three games. He leads the team with eight homers and 36 RBIs.
After the emotional game-one victory, the Eagles came out ready to go in the nightcap led by another sensational pitching performance by senior righthander Joe Martinez.
Martinez (6-2) tossed his third consecutive nine-inning complete game while striking out 11. The senior, last week's Big East Pitcher of the Week, didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and now leads the Eagles with 79 strikeouts.
Leading 3-1, the BC bats erupted for five runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh. Delaney broke the game open with two-run double and catcher Shawn McGill also ripped a run-scoring double in the rally. Senior Tom Mackor capped the inning with a two-run single.
The Hoyas answered with three runs on four hits in the top of the eighth, but the Eagles scored two more in the bottom half of the inning to put the game away.
McGill led the offensive barrage with a 4-for-5 effort, knocking in two runs. Delaney had another big game for BC, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the nightcap.
McGuire was 4-for-7 with five runs scored in the doubleheader. He also stole two bases in the second game, giving him 21 swipes on the season. The sophomore now has 21 multiple-hit games this spring.
The Eagles and the Hoyas will finish their three-game series on Monday at 1 p.m.
