Boston College senior pitcher Joe Martinez was named Big East Pitcher of the Week in an announcement made by the conference office on Monday.
Martinez tossed his second nine-inning complete game in as many weeks on Saturday afternoon, striking out 11 en route to a 15-0 win over Rutgers in the second game of a doubleheader in Piscataway, N.J. The senior scattered four hits and surrendered just two walks in the outing.
It was the fourth time this season Martinez has struck out 10 or more batters and his first shutout of the season. He leads the Eagles with 68 strikeouts in 57.0 innings of work. The senior improved to 5-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.53.
Martinez is the first Boston College pitcher to earn Player of the Week honors this season.
The Eagles took two out of three games from the Scarlet Knights this weekend and improved to 9-4 in the Big East, one-half game ahead of Notre Dame. BC is 23-11 overall.
The Northeast's second-ranked team will play Northeastern in the opening round of the Beanpot Tournament on Wednesday in Lowell, Mass. at 5 p.m.
