Baseball Takes Two From Rutgers

Senior righthander Joe Martinez tossed his second nine-inning complete game in as many weeks on Saturday afternoon, striking out 11 en route to a 15-0 win over Rutgers in the second game of a doubleheader in Piscataway, N.J. The Eagles won the first game, 6-4.
Martinez was virtually unhittable as he scattered four hits and surrendered just two walks in the outing. It was the fourth time this season Martinez has struck out 10 or more batters and his first shutout of the season. He leads the Eagles with 68 strikeouts in 57.0 innings of work. The senior improves to 5-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.53.
The Eagles sent 12 batters to the plate in a six-run seventh inning that extended their lead to 13-0. Senior Drew Locke and sophomore Jared Mcguire were both hit by pitches to start the inning and senior Jason Delaney followed with a walk to load the bases. After Rutgers (18-14, 6-5) replaced the pitcher, catcher Shawn McGill drew a walk, knocking in Locke.
Right fielder Mike Flynn collected BC's first hit of the inning with a sharp RBI single through the left side. After Ryne Reynoso popped up to the second baseman, shortstop Jonny Weiss singled down the left field line to bring home two more BC runners. Second baseman Johnny Ayers followed with a single up the middle to score Flynn. First baseman Dave Preziosi registered the final hit of the inning with a run-scoring single up the middle.
BC (23-10, 9-3) jumped on the board with four runs in the top of the third inning. McGill hit a two-run triple during the rally. It was his second triple in the last three games.
The Eagles scored three more runs on four hits in the fourth on singles by Flynn, Reynoso, Locke and McGuire.
Reynoso added an RBI single in the eighth as BC scored two final runs.
The game-one victory featured another strong pitching performance from a BC starter. Southpaw Mike Wlodarczyk struck out nine in a seven-inning complete-game effort to earn his Big East-leading seventh win of the year. It was the lefty's third complete game of the season.
The Eagles scored a run in the first and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead. The Scarlet Knights tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
BC answered back in the top of the fifth as Locke blasted his third home run of the season. The two-run shot down the right field line scored Preziosi, who led off the inning with a single. McGill added an RBI double later in the inning to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead.
Locke was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the game-one victory. McGill knocked in five runs on the afternoon.
The team's will play the third game of the series tomorrow at 12 p.m.
