Drew Locke ripped an RBI single to left field to break up Hartford's shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth as the Boston College baseball team fell in its first game at Shea Field on Thursday afternoon, 8-1.
Hartford (3-11) scored four runs on five hits in the top of the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. With one out and runners on first and third, shortstop Erik Price singled to right field, knocking in Luke Trahan. After catcher Craig Vincellette singled to right field to load the bases, BC starting pitcher Nick Asselin registered one of his 10 strikeouts to get the second out of the inning.
Asselin (0-3) appeared to have quelled the rally as he induced Hawks third baseman Adam Bowser to hit a ground ball to third baseman Jared Mcguire, but the sophomore bobbled the ball and allowed another Hartford run to cross the plate. It was one of three unearned runs for the Hawks in the inning.
BC (21-10) threatened to answer in the bottom half of the inning as Shawn McGill ripped a one-out single to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Hartford pitcher John Coury (1-0). Senior Tom Mackor drew a walk and he and McGill executed a double steal to put runners on second and third for freshman Brandon Ziemann. The right fielder popped to first and Jett Ruiz did the same to end the inning.
Hartford scored an additional run in the third, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
The Eagles best chance to claw back into the game came in the seventh inning. With one out, shortstop Jonny Weiss singled up the middle and McGuire was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced to second on a balk by Coury and the bases were loaded after senior Jason Delaney drew a walk. Locke hit a sharp ground ball right at the second baseman, who was able to turn the double play and end the Eagles' threat.
Freshman Nick Napolitano threw two innings in relief of Asselin, striking out one while allowing just one hit.
McGuire was 2-for-4 and has now hit safely in 26 of BC's 31 games. The sophomore leads the Big East with a .436 batting average. He scored the Eagles' lone run of the afternoon.
BC returns to action this weekend when it heads to Piscataway, N.J. for a three-game set with Big East rival Rutgers.
