Jared Mcguire was 5-for-6 with two RBI and Drew Locke went 4-for-5 with three runs scored to lead the Boston College baseball team to its first win of the season. The Eagles (1-4) pounded 23 hits in a 17-0 win over La Salle on Sunday morning.
The Eagles got on the board early after McGuire collected his first hit of the day with two outs in the top of the first. On an 0-and-1 count, the third baseman singled to right center to score senior Dave Preziosi, who had singled earlier in the inning.
Starting pitcher Mike Wlodarczyk (1-1) made quick work of the Explorers in the bottom half of the inning, allowing just one single. The southpaw worked six scoreless innings and struck out a career-high 10 batters.
In the top of the second, BC scored five more to give the Eagles a comfortable six-run lead. After catcher Shawn McGill reached on a fielding error by shortstop Derick Reis and stole second, shortstop Marco Albano hit BC's first home run of the season. Albano was 3-for-5 with four RBI in the game. BC went on to score three more runs on three base hits in the inning.
The Eagles failed to score in the third, but plated three more in the fourth. Locke began the rally with a double to left and senior co-captain Jason Delaney knocked him in with a single up the middle. McGuire hit his third single of the game to move Delaney up to third and senior Mike Flynn proceeded to score Delaney with a single to left. The base hit chased La Salle starting pitcher Dan Waters.
BC scored two more in the fifth, none in the sixth and another two runs in the seventh to make the score 13-0. Five hits in the top of ninth, including an RBI double by Johnny Ayers and a two-run single by Tom Mackor gave the Eagles their final runs of the day.
Nate Jeanes worked the seventh and eighth innings in relief of Wlodarczyk and struck out three batters. Sophomore Ted Ratliff worked a scoreless ninth.
