Boston College dropped its annual exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox in Fort Myers, Fla. on Friday night, losing 11-5 to the world champions.
The Eagles fell behind quickly as starting pitcher Nate Jeanes got touched up for three hits and four earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Sophomores Matt Meyer and Kevin Boggan proceeded to throw the ensuing 2.1 innings, combining to surrender four unearned runs as the Red Sox took an early 8-0 lead.
After Matt Mantei struck out the side for the Red Sox in the third inning, the Eagle bats came alive in the top of the fourth. Pitcher Manny Delcarmen struggled against the BC offense, surrendering five runs on three hits and two walks to make the score 8-5. Sophomore Jared Mcguire had a two-run double and senior Jason Delaney had an RBI triple during the rally.
BC allowed three more unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth and the Sox took an 11-5 lead and held on for the win. The Eagles committed five errors in the game, leading to seven unearned runs.
Mike Timlin notched the victory for the Red Sox, retiring the side in order in the top of the first.
Twenty-six players appeared in the game for Boston College, and at least two players saw action at every position on the field.
The Eagles have faced the Red Sox 15 times and have lost each game. The teams met for the first time in 1916, with the Red Sox registering a 9-1 victory. They have met every year since 1993, with the Eagles losing by just one run in 1999 and 2002. The Red Sox won by the same score in 2001.
