Senior Drew Locke went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and three RBI, and Ryan Hutchinson scored three runs to lead the Boston College baseball team over Rhode Island, 7-3, on Thursday afternoon at Northeastern's Friedman Diamond.
The Eagles (15-6) scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to claim a 5-2 lead which they never relinquished. After Dave Preziosi made the first out of the inning, Hutchinson, Jared Mcguire and Jason Delaney hit three consecutive singles to left field.
With Delaney and McGuire on first and second, respectively, the Eagles executed a double steal to advance both runners. Locke made the second out of the inning when he grounded to second base, but knocked in McGuire to make the score 3-2. Shawn McGill then singled up the middle to score Delaney and chased Rhode Island starting pitcher Jim Norcott.
Sophomore Ted Ratliff started on the hill for the Eagles and struggled with his control, walking six and throwing three wild pitches. Ratliff scattered three hits over four innings and was relieved by freshman Terry Doyle in the top of the fifth. Doyle (2-0) allowed one run in three innings of relief to pick up the win.
The Eagles scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning. With one out, Hutchinson singled up the middle and advanced to second on McGuire's groundout to shortstop. Hutchinson stole third and Delaney reached on a walk. With runners on first and third, and Delaney running on the pitch, Locke singled through the right side to score Hutchinson and give BC a 1-0 lead.
URI (6-11) answered back in the top of third, scoring two runs on a pair of hits. After Ratliff walked leadoff hitter Daryl Holcomb, designated hitter Matt Sullivan singled, putting runners on first and third. Holcomb scored on Scott Brown's sacrifice fly to center field, tying the score 1-1. Ryan Cunningham doubled past a diving Delaney in left field, scoring Sullivan from first, and put URI ahead, 2-1.
Locke's fourth-inning home run, his first this season, tied the game at two.
Nick Asselin worked two scoreless innings to pick up his second save of the year for BC.
