Shawn McGill scored after a St. John's error in the top of the 12th inning, helping Boston College to a 4-3 victory in the second game of a Big East doubleheader on Saturday in Queens, N.Y. BC lost the first game, 4-0.
Red Storm junior Craig Hansen hit McGill to lead off the 12th and the catcher advanced to second on Mike Flynn's sacrifice bunt. After sophomore Ryne Reynoso struck out to make the second out of the inning, freshman Jonny Weiss grounded to first base. St. John's first baseman Anthony Smith bobbled the ball and McGill beat the throw home to give BC the lead.
The Eagles (9-9) had taken a 3-0 lead early in the nightcap, scoring one run in the fourth and two in the top of the fifth. BC had all three of its hits in the fifth, as Pete Frates, Dave Preziosi and Jared Mcguire all singled during the rally.
Preziosi, who started the game at first base, relieved starter Nick Asselin in the bottom of the sixth. After working a scoreless inning, Preziosi recorded one out in the bottom of the seventh before heading back to first.
After McGill scored in the top of the 12th, Preziosi came back to work the bottom half of the inning on the mound. The senior surrendered one hit, but held on to record his first save of the season. Kevin Boggan (3-0) worked four innings out of the bullpen to get the win.
The Eagles dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 4-0, as they were able to muster just five hits off of St. John's starter Anthony Varvaro. Preziosi was 2-for-4 in the loss. He now has a 14-game hitting streak.
Nate Jeanes (1-1) worked six innings on the hill to take the loss for BC. He scattered five hits and struck out six St. John's batters.
Boston College opens its home schedule on Tuesday when it hosts Rhode Island at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Shea Field.
