The Boston College baseball team continued its early-season struggles on Saturday, losing both ends of a doubleheader against Belmont in the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn.
The Eagles (0-3) out hit Belmont 7-4 in the first game, but starting pitcher Joe Martinez had control problems that proved costly in the 3-1 loss. Martinez threw the first complete game of his career, but hit three batters and balked three times, including twice during Belmont's two-run first inning.
Left fielder Jason Delaney was 3-for-3 for the Eagles and scored the team's lone run in the sixth inning after junior Robert Dittrich hit an RBI triple.
In the second game, the BC defense was a liability as the Eagles committed five errors and allowed four unearned runs in a 6-1 loss.
BC received a solid pitching performance from sophomore Matt Meyer, as the southpaw recorded seven strikeouts and allowed just three hits in five innings of work. Freshman Terry Doyle came in to throw the sixth inning and had one strikeout in his collegiate debut.
With Belmont (5-2) leading 2-0, BC had a chance to get back into the game in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Drew Locke led off with a double and Delaney and third baseman Jared Mcguire followed with walks. With the bases loaded, senior Mike Flynn hit into a double play and scored Locke. The Eagles were unable to score any more runs.
Boston College will play its fourth and final game of the Music City Classic on Sunday when it takes on Lipscomb at noon.
