The UMass-Lowell River Hawks defeated men's hockey, 3-1, in front of 4,809 fans at Kelley Rink on Friday night. The game opened what will be a telling conclusion to BC's regular season. The Eagles play UML, New Hampshire and Maine twice before postseason play.
BC (19-5-5, 12-2-5) was unbeaten in its 11 home games prior to tonight's loss.
The Eagles went up 1-0 at 4:24 in the first period when sophomore forward Brian Boyle netted his 12th goal of the season. Joe Rooney started the play when he intercepted a pass in front of the UML net. He put a shot on River Hawk goalie Jon Yaros and he saved it. Boyle was there for the put-back at far post.
At 16:21 in the opening frame, River Hawk junior Ben Walter scored a deflection goal on the power play to knot the game at 1-1. The goal was Walter's 25th of the season.
At 18:56, UML (18-7-4, 9-7-3) opened its lead to two when sophomore Todd Fletcher scored the game-winner.
UML added one to their lead at 0:58 in the second period with a tally from sophomore Jason Tejchma to put UML up 3-1.
The River Hawks' three goals came on their first six shots.
During the second intermission, a fire alarm forced the evacuation of Kelley Rink. As the Eagle returned to the ice minutes later, there was a rejuvenated intensity. The Eagle created many opportunities before the final seconds ticked off of the clock, but at no avail.
BC senior goaltender Matti Kaltiainen took his fifth loss, making 20 saves in 58:48. The Eagles out-shot the River Hawks 33-23 in the game, including a 14-5 barrage of attempts in the first period of play.
