Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The women's ice hockey team lost a tough game on Sunday afternoon to the Providence College Friars, 4-2. The Eagles (5-4-4, 4-2-1 Hockey East) made a valiant effort at a comeback after being down 4-0 until the end of the second period, but fell short as time expired. Providence now stands at 9-5-2 and 6-2-1 in league play.
The first period of play was dominated by defense for both teams. The Friars had eight shots on goal while the Eagles were held to only six. The Friars struck first as 12:09 in the first as junior Sonny Watrous snuck a shot in the corner past freshman goaltender Johanna Ellison, to put Providence up, 1-0. Ellison would eventually finish the game with 24 saves in two periods played.
In the second period the Friars came out shooting. The Friars scored three times in the second period on 20 shots on goal as Ellison made 17 saves. Watrous scored for the second time in the game and Cherie Hendrickson scored the eventual game-winning goal with five minutes left in the second period.
The Eagles had five shots on goal in the second period and had trouble getting their offense started. Freshman Becky Zavisza scored the Eagles first goal with 1:35 left in the second period. The freshman forward leads the Eagles with 10 goals and is second in scoring with 15 points. Zavisza has scored at least one point in the last four games of the season.
"We played pretty well in the first period, but special teams really hurt us tonight," head coach Tom Mutch said. "We struggled in the second period and we really have to find a way to be more consistent period to period and game to game. We will just have to put this loss behind us and look ahead to next Saturday."
Despite having only four shots on goal in the third period, freshman defenseman Maggie Taverna scored her third goal of the season on a power play early in the third period. Tavera has scored at least one point in the last six games for the Eagles. Taverna is now tied for third in scoring for the Eagles with sophomore Sarah Feldman with 11 points. Senior co-captain Alison Quandt entered the game in the third period in goal, saving all six shots she faced.
Despite a few power play opportunities the Eagles could not find a way to get the puck past senior goaltender Jana Bugden. Bugden finished with 13 saves for the Friars.
The Eagles finish up their 2005 Hockey East schedule as they take on Northeastern next Saturday at home at 2 p.m. The Eagles will be off for two weeks until they travel to Lake Placid on Dec. 30 and 31 to take on No. 8 Clarkson.
