Boston College defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka was named to the 2005 AFCA Coaches' All-America Team announced today by the American Football Coaches Association. Kiwanuka was among eight players from the Atlantic Coast Conference named to the team, the most of any conference.
Kiwanuka earned AFCA All-America honors for the second year in a row. The senior was named to eight different preseason All-America teams and received All-ACC first-team honors this past week. He was voted ACC Preseason Player of the Year before he ever played an ACC game. He also was a semifinalist for the 2005 Bednarik Award, given to the nation's top defensive player, and the Lombardi Award, given to the nation's outstanding lineman. He is ranked as the number one defensive end in the nation by The Sporting News and has 243 career tackles, a school-record 37.5 QB sacks, 64.5 tackles-for-loss, and 13 pass breakups in 48 games over four seasons. He finished the 2005 regular season with 49 tackles and led the team with 9.5 QB sacks and 15.5 tackles-for-loss.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all four of its divisions. The AFCA's Division I-A All-America Selection Committee is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA's nine I-A districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts, that information, along with ballots submitted by I-A head coaches, are used to select the AFCA I-A Coaches' All-America Team.
