Freshman guard Tyrese Rice earned Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week honors after posting two 20-point efforts to help BC capture the 2005 Las Vegas Holiday Invitational title. The weekly award, announced by the league office, is decided by a vote of a 10-member media panel.
Rice averaged 18.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in three BC victories last week. He came off the bench in each of the games, averaging 25.0 minutes per game. The 6-foot guard shot 63.0 percent from the field (17-for-27), 55.6 percent from three-point range (10-for-18) and 91.7 percent from the foul line (11-for-12).
He netted 12 points in a 92-63 home victory over Buffalo on Nov. 22. He followed that effort with a career-high 22 points against Drake on Nov. 25 (in Las Vegas). In the tournament championship game the next night, Rice tallied 21 points, including a career-high five three-pointers, to help BC overcome a second-half deficit and defeat Oklahoma State.
Rice became the first BC freshman to post consecutive 20-point games since current senior Craig Smith did so against Stony Brook and Harvard on Dec. 15 and 22, 2002. Smith was selected to the 2005-06 Associated Press Preseason All-America Team.
Rice and Smith both earned All-Tournament accolades this past weekend. Junior teammate Jared Dudley captured tournament MVP honors.
Boston College, ranked eighth in this week's Associated Press poll, hosts Sacred Heart in Conte Forum on Saturday, Dec. 3. Game time is 7 p.m.
