CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior forward Jared Dudley tallied 18 points and nine rebounds and senior forward Craig Smith posted 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead 11th-ranked Boston College to a 70-51 victory over Shawnee State before 4,187 fans in Conte Forum.
The game was the first of four games that each of the two teams will play in the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational. BC will host Buffalo on Tuesday, Nov. 22 in its second tournament contest. Shawnee State's next tournament game will be played at Drake on Nov. 22.
The visiting Bears kept pace through the game's first 10 minutes. Trailing 12-9, Shawnee State scored four straight points to gain a 13-12 lead, its last advantage of the day. Dudley converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 9:18 left in the half to put BC on top for good.
BC outscored the visitors 19-9 the rest of the half and led 34-22 at the intermission. Dudley totaled 12 points, while Smith and junior guard Sean Marshall each contributed eight first-half points.
BC never allowed the Bears to trim the margin to single-digits. The Eagles extended their advantage to 20 points - 49-29 - on a Smith field goal with 11:02 to play.
Game Notes: BC shot 0-for-11 from three-point range, marking the first time since March 11, 2004 that the Eagles were scoreless from long range ... Marshall turned in an impressive performance, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds in 31 minutes ... Senior Ted Dunlap tallied his first collegiate points, sinking a field goal with 1:17 to play ... BC was outrebounded, 43-38 ... BC shot 40.6 percent from the floor - 35.0 percent in the first half and 50.0 percent in the second half ... BC committed just nine turnovers, while forcing 24 Bear miscues ... Smith, Dudley and freshman Marquez Haynes each blocked two shots.
