<>CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior forward Craig Smith tallied 22 points and nine rebounds and junior forward Jared Dudley notched 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead 11th-ranked Boston College to an 80-61 season-opening victory over Dartmouth before 5,758 fans in Conte Forum.
Junior guard Sean Marshall shot 6-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-6 from three-point range, to finish with 15 points. Senior guard Louis Hinnant rounded out the Eagles' list of double-digit scorers, totaling 12 points. Hinnant scored eight straight BC points midway through the second half.
Dartmouth's Calvin Arnold opened the night's scoring with a three-point field goal 30 seconds into the contest, but Smith answered with his team's first five points of the season to give BC a lead that it would never relinquish.
The Big Green evened the score at 5-5, before BC scored 12 straight points in a three-minute span to gain control. Dartmouth never got closer than seven points the rest of the way. BC led 41-30 at the break.
Smith and Marshall each scored 11 points first-half points. Freshman Tyrese Rice wasted little time making his mark. Less than one minute after entering the game, the Richmond, Va., resident converted a lay-up for his first collegiate points (with 13:50 left on the clock). He later hit a three-point field goal and made one free throw to finish with six points at the intermission.
BC's advantage was never threatened in the second half, although the visitors didn't quit. The Eagles never led by more than 14 points until Rice's lay-in with 3:13 to play gave BC a 73-57 cushion.
Game Notes: Freshman guard Marquez Haynes opened his collegiate career with two points and three assists in 15 minutes of action ... Sophomore center John Oates made his first collegiate start and posted seven points and three rebounds. Oates sank one three-point field goal ... Senior guard Tyler Neville converted a nifty lay-up with 35 seconds to play ... BC gained a 36-30 rebounding edge ... Dudley's 12-point, 10-rebound effort marked the 11th double-double of his career ... Smith, who sank 64.2 percent of his free-throw attempts in his first three years, saw his extra practice pay dividends tonight. The Los Angeles, Calif., resident sank 10-of-11 free-throw attempts ... BC shot 50.9 percent from the field.
