ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Senior forward Chris Collins and sophomore forward Dan Bertram each tallied one goal while sophomore goaltender Cory Schneider registered 35 saves to lead No. 4 Boston College in a 3-2 loss to No. 7 Michigan at Yost Ice Arena on Friday night.
Down 3-2, junior Brian Boyle scored what would have been the equalizer with 27 seconds on the clock, but the goal was disallowed after defenseman Peter Harrold was penalized for charging on Michigan goaltender Billy Sauer.
The Eagles, who were penalized three times in the first five minutes and 30 seconds of play, fell behind 2-0 on a consecutive power-play goals from Michigan's Jack Johnson at 1:44 and T.J. Hensick at 7:20. Matt Hunwick assisted on both first-period goals.
A total of seven penalties were called in the first period of play, including one on Michigan's Andrew Ebbett, who received a five-minute major penalty for checking from behind and a game misconduct at 9:26.
Boston College took advantage as Collins got the Eagles on the board with a power-play tally at 11:04, beating Sauer quickly off the face off taken by Stephen Gionta. The goal marked BC's first goal of the season.
After the Wolverines built another two-goal lead on a goal from Travis Turnbull, Bertram cut the Eagles' deficit back to one as he knocked home a Boyle shot that trickled past Sauer at 11:42 in the second. Sophomore Brian O'Hanley also assisted on the play.
Schneider, who blocked 35 of 38 shots including three one-on-one opportunities, suffered just his second defeat in 19 career games.
Boston College travels to Bowling Green, Ohio to take on its second Central Collegiate Hockey Association opponent in as many nights as the Eagles will face off against Bowling Green at the BGSU Ice Arena on Saturday. The game is set for 7 p.m.
