Senior quarterback Paul Peterson (Ephraim, UT) completed five-of-eight passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns in Boston College's first preseason scrimmage Monday evening in a soggy Alumni Stadium. Sophomore Tony Gonzalez (Framingham, MA) was on the receiving end of two of those TD throws, including a 25-yarder, while redshirt freshman Kevin Challenger (Montreal, Quebec) snagged the other TD. Senior Quinton Porter (Portland, ME) completed four-of-eight throws for 68 yards on the night. Redshirt freshman Matt Ryan (Exton, PA) completed one-of-five passes for five yards. Sophomore wide receiver Taylor Sele (Richmond Hill, NY) caught a 57-yard pass from Peterson and finished with two catches for 62 yards, while sophomore Jason Lilly (Dover, DE) caught three passes for 61 yards. The scrimmage also featured standout defensive efforts by senior defensive tackle Tim Bulman (Milton, MA) and linebackers Jolonn Dunbar (Syracuse, NY) and Brian Toal (Wyckoff, NJ). "I think it was a typical first scrimmage" Head Coach Tom O'Brien said. "I liked our intensity. I thought they really went after it. But we're a long way from fielding a polished product." Four running backs vying for the starting job combined to rush for 104 yards. Redshirt freshman L.V. Whitworth (Milton, MA) led the way with 10 carries for 37 yards and a touchdown. True freshman AJ Brooks (Orlando, FL) carried the ball 11 times for 32 yards, and redshirt freshman Andre Callender (Roselle, NJ) picked up 25 yards on 12 carries. Sophomore Jeff Ross (Lowell, MA) carried the ball 11 times for 10 yards. "They (running backs) all showed toughness, and no one put the ball on the ground, which is a positive," O'Brien said. "We have some decisions to make at certain positions. Right now we're trying to work those decisions out. But this is a start." Freshman place-kicker Ryan Ohliger (Newark, DE) connected on field goals from 33 and 35 yards, but a 40-yard attempt was blocked by sophomore safety Ryan Glasper (Southington, CT) and run back for a 55-yard touchdown by junior cornerback Jazzmen Williams (Pittsford, NY). The Eagles will scrimmage again Friday evening and next Monday in preparation for the season opener at Ball State on September 2.
