Two Baseball Players Selected in Second Day of MLB Draft

The Philadelphia Phillies selected Boston College junior pitcher Kevin Shepard (Andover, Mass.) in the 30th round and the Chicago Cubs chose third baseman Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) in the second day of the 2004 First-year Player MLB Draft, Tuesday, June 8. Shepard and Morgan are the fourth and fifth Boston College Baseball players selected.
Shepard, 902nd pick of the draft, owns a team-best record of 8-4 in 91.2 innings pitched and has surrendered 51 runs - 37 earned - on 88 hits with 52 strikeouts and 41 walks. He earned five victories in his last five pitching appearances, including a nine-inning complete game effort against Virginia Tech on May 15, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. He was the only BC pitcher to earn a win against #10 Auburn when he threw 5.0 innings, surrendering five hits and two runs on Feb. 21.
Morgan, the 1265 pick, started all 59 games for the Eagles, hitting .284 for the season with a .452 slugging percentage and .405 on-base percentage. The junior amassed 14 multiple-hit games including two contests with three hits, and he drove in two or more runs in 10 games. He was issued a free pass 38 times this season.
Three Eagles were selected in the first day of the 2004 Draft, held on Monday, June 7. Chris Lambert (Manchester, N.H.) was chosen as the St. Louis Cardinals' no. 1 pick and the 19th pick overall. In the 15th round, the Montreal Expos took junior pitcher Mike Wlodarczyk (Medford, N.J.) as the draft's 444th overall pick and in the 18th round, the Chicago Cubs chose Jake Marsello (Lynn, Mass.), the 546th overall pick in the draft.
