Boston College graduated baseball player Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass./St. John's Prep) signed as a free agent with the Anaheim Angels organization this week.
On June 10, Leahy will report to the Angels mini-camp in Mesa, Ariz. then is scheduled to participate on Anaheim's single A squad in Provo, Utah.
Leahy concluded his senior season with a .319 batting average and 34 RBIs. The BIG EAST Second Team recipient also produced 20 multiple-hit games and six multiple-RBI contests. His 76-hit total in 2004 fell two shy of the BC single-season record held by current Assistant Coach Mike Gambino and helped him to a share of the program's eighth-best career hits total of 178. The shortstop batted .380 in league play, the fourth-best clip of all league hitters.
The BIG EAST Conference named Leahy Player of the Week after a 9-for-16 performance from April 19-25, a week capped by a three-hit, four-RBI effort in the first round of the Beanpot Tournament vs. Harvard on April 20. His 15-game hit streak from March 28 - April 29 is a season best for any Eagles in 2004.
"He has really grown with us," BC Head Coach Pete Hughes said. "He's a classic overachiever and deserves this opportunity to play at the next level."
BC (32-27, 15-9) advanced to the championship round of the BIG EAST Tournament but fell to #7 Notre Dame, Saturday, May 29 by a score of 11-5 in Bridgewater, N.J.
