BIG EAST Honors Conference's Best In Softball

Syracuse, N.Y. - The BIG EAST Conference honored its best in softball Thursday at the pre-championship awards brunch held in conjunction with the 2004 BIG EAST Softball Championship at the Softball Stadium at Skytop on the campus of Syracuse University in New York.
As announced by the conference office, Notre Dame took home nearly all major awards. Megan Ciolli was named Player of the Year while her Irish teammate Steffany Stenglein was named Pitcher of the Year. The Irish coaching staff of Deanna Gumpf, Charmelle Green, and Kris Ganeff was honored as Coaching Staff of the Year.
Notre Dame earned seven of the 12 All-BIG EAST first team slots. Boston College placed two players on the All-BIG EAST third team squad. Senior pitcher Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) and freshman designated player Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) appeared on the 11-member third team.
Malandris leads the Eagle pitching staff with a 1.42 ERA over 31 appearances. She has an 11-8 record and has struck out a 136 batters in 138.0 innings pitched. In conference games, she has a 6-4 record with a 1.62 ERA. Malandris is a two-time All-BIG EAST second team selection.
Thompson, appearing on her first All-BIG EAST team, is hitting .287 (33-for-115), behind only classmate Ashley Obrest (.302). She has knocked a team-high eight home runs and 28 RBI. In addition, she has a 13-9 mark in the circle.
The Eagles will face Notre Dame at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in their first game of the BIG EAST Tournament. Villanova and Seton Hall meet at 5:00 p.m. All games can be followed via live stats on the BIG EAST website at www.bceagles.com or at Syracuse's website at www.suathletics.com.
