In windy weather better suited for kite flying, the Boston College baseball team defeated host Rhode Island, 3-0, to improve to 9-16 on the season.
The Eagles prevailed behind timely offense and brilliant pitching from Jake Marsello (Lynn, Mass.), Joe Martinez (South Orange, N.J.), Matt Meyer (Rochester, Minn.), and Mike Gauthier (Salem, Mass.), who yielded a combined total of four hits. Martinez picked up his second win of the season, working 2.0 innings. He accounted for two of the Eagle staff?s six strikeouts while Gauthier earned his fifth save of the season in 1.2 innings of work.
The Eagle offense rallied after a courageous defensive stand in the bottom of the fourth inning which saw BC escape a one-out, bases-loaded situation unscathed when Martinez got URI's no. 6 batter to ground into an inning-ending double play.
In BC's next offensive chance (fifth inning), Jared McGuire (Harwich, Mass.) singled then moved to third on Shawn McGill's (South Kingstown, R.I.) single to right field. Tri-captain Eric Wright (Southboro, Mass.) then laid down an awesome suicide squeeze bunt to plate all the run support that BC would need.
Ryan Morgan led off the sixth with his second hit of the day and advanced to third via two hits batsmen, juicing the bases. The subsequent batter, Jared McGuire, walked to bring home another run. Senior Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.) doubled in BC's final tally in the top of the ninth inning, extending his hitting streak to five games. BC batters registered nine hits on the day.
BC travels to Villanova Thursday, April 8. Game time for the BIG EAST doubleheader is 12 noon. NJ
