Junior Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) drove in the game-winning run in the 12th inning to lift the Boston College (17-20, 6-6) baseball team to the 7-6 win over Connecticut (20-19, 6-9) in the nightcap of a BIG EAST doubleheader, Sunday, April 25, in Chestnut Hill. Connecticut grabbed the game one victory in an 8-5 decision.
The Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, two of which came with two outs, to knot the game at six and force extra innings. In that stanza, BC benefited from UConn right fielder's Tony Mallozzi's dropped fly which placed BC's first batter, Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.), on third base. The next batter, Drew Locke, grounded out to bring Morgan home, and two batters later, classmate Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) reached on the second Connecticut error of the inning, this time a boot by the third baseman. After Josh DiScipio (Schenectady, N.Y.) walked on five pitches, senior Garrett Greer (Peabody, Mass.) doubled down the right field line, scoring Pete Frates (Beverly, Mass.), who pinch ran for Delaney. UConn's Joe Smeraglino then intentionally walked the next BC batter, left-handed Eric Wright (Southboro, Mass.), to juice the bases before facing another left-handed bat in pinch-hitter Dave Preziosi (Oradell, N.J.), who battled from an 0-2 deficit, before sending an RBI dribbler through the middle which Husky shortstop Dennis Donovan could not handle cleanly, allowing Wright to reach second base safely. Donovan did manage to put off BC's game-winning tally, though, throwing out pinch-runner Mike Flynn (Trumbull, Conn.) at the plate, when he attempted to score from second base on the same play.
In 6.2 shutout innings of relief, junior Jake Marsello (Lynn, Mass.) surrendered one hit and struck out a collegiate-high nine batters, including five in the three extra innings, when he also allowed only two Connecticut baserunners.
With one out in the bottom of the 12th inning, Sean McGill (South Kingstown, R.I.) and Ryan Morgan delivered back-to-back singles off UConn's third pitcher of the game, Rich Sirois, setting the stage for Drew Locke's third and game-deciding RBI to right center.
Connecticut scored a combined eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings to erase a one-time 4-0 deficit and win the first game, 8-5, between the league foes. Three Huskies contributed a pair of hits including Marc Peluso, Matt Untiet, and Tim Dempsey. BC's Chris Lambert (Manchester, N.H.) picked up the mound loss, allowing six hits in 4.0 innings of work with five strikeouts. Mike James of Connecticut settled down after allowing the initial five BC runs in the first four innings. He surrendered a total of nine hits in a complete-game, 7.0-inning effort.
BC hosts Northeastern, Tuesday, April 27. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
