Softball Shut Out By Massachusetts, 4-0

AMHERST, Mass. - The Boston College softball team dropped a single game to Massachusetts, 4-0, Thursday afternoon at the UMass Softball Complex. The Minutewomen have now won 13 games in a row and 62 straight at home. With the loss, the Eagles dropped to 24-16 overall.
The Eagles threatened to score first in the second inning. A single by Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) and a walk to Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) put two runners on with one out. After a wild pitch, both runners moved into scoring position. The Minutewomen, however, got the next two Eagles to stop the threat.
In the bottom of the third, the Minutewomen broke into the scoring column. Junior Hilary Puglia singled to center field with one out and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Candice Molinari. Kelley then came up and hit a 2-0 pitch over the right-center field fence. The line drive home run was her 12th of the year breaking the single-season high of 11 set by Brandi Cross last year.
Massachusetts then added two insurance runs in the fifth inning. Sophomore Kristi Stefanoni led off the inning by striking out, but was able to reach first base on a wild pitch. Junior Denise Denis then reached on an error and the Minutewomen had runners on second and third with nobody out. Puglia then delivered a RBI single to left field, her second hit of the day. Two batters later, UMass made it a 4-0 game when Puglia and Molinari successfully pulled off a double steal. Puglia raced home when BC catcher Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) threw down to second trying to nab Molinari.
Arnold breezed through seven innings for her third shutout of the season and is now 10-5. She scattered three hits and a walk while not striking out a batter. Daly threw the first four innings for the Eagles. She gave up two earned runs on three hits and a walk. Daly fanned four. Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) then came in and threw the final two innings. She gave up two unearned runs on a hit and no walks while striking out two.
Boston College will face BIG EAST foes Villanova (Saturday) and Rutgers (Sunday) on the road this weekend. The Eagles return to Shea Field April 24-25.
