The Boston College baseball team (3-7) dropped two games, Saturday, March 6 in Bradenton, Fla. The Eagles fell to Bowling Green, 1-0, in the early game then lost to Rhode Island, 5-1 in the later contest.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between BC's starting ace Chris Lambert (Manchester, N.H.) and a trio of Falcon hurlers. Lambert and the Boston College defense retired 15 straight batters from the third to the eighth innings. The first time a BGSU player advanced to second base was with one out in the ninth when Tyler Wasserman dribbled a single through the left side and moved up on Lambert's wild pitch. David Barkholz singled, accounting for the Falcons' other hit, to left to push across Wasserman for the lone run. The BGSU threat didn't end there, Barkholz stole second and third, and Eric Lawson walked to get on first, but Andy Hudak flied out to right for the inning-ending out.
At game's end, Lambert struck out eight and walked only one in his complete-game effort.
BC baserunners were caught stealing three times in that game, and the offense didn't support Lambert's effort, compiling four hits all game. Three Falcon hurlers combined for the shutout, fronted by starting pitcher Tyler Saneholz, who allowed three hits and struck out eight in six innings. Burke Badenhop got out the two batters that he faced, and Neil Schmitz surrendered one hit in 2.1 innings of work for the win.
In the second game, URI's Jim Norcott replaced starting pitcher Dan Frederick in the bottom of the fourth inning. Norcott scattered two hits through 6.0 innings of work, striking out three batters. BC posted just four hits, one of which was a home run by Jake Marsello (Lynn, Mass.) as compared to eight from the competition.
Matt O'Donnell (Marlboro, Mass.) had the loss, he gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings.
BC plays IPFW, Sunday, March 7, for its final game in Florida. Game time is 9 a.m.
