College Park, Md. - The Boston College softball team collected two victories on the first day of the Maryland Invitational at Terrapin Complex in College Park, Md. The Eagles topped host Maryland, 3-2, in the first game. They posted another 3-2 over Brown in the twin bill. BC improves to 14-9 on the season.
Boston College used a solid pitching effort from Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) and an eight-hit offensive attack to post the 3-2 win over Maryland. The Eagles pushed one run across in the second inning. With two outs, Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on an Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) single. Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) knocked in Obrest for the game's first run.
The Eagles allowed two Maryland hits and committed one error in the bottom of the same inning for a 1-1 score. An Elyse Meredith (Basking Ridge, N.J.) RBI double gave BC the 2-1 lead in the third inning. Meredith came through again in the fifth, knocking an RBI single with two outs to give her team a 3-1 lead.
Meredith finished the game with two RBI and a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) was 3-for-4. Malandris struck out eight and walked just two en route to the win in the circle. Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) collected the save.
In the second game of the day, the Eagles went up 1-0 early and added two runs in the sixth for the 3-2 win. Thompson knocked in the first run while a Brown error and an sacrifice fly by Meredith accounted for the second run and third runs. Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) was 2-for-3 on the afternoon.
Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) pitched the complete-game win, striking out two while allowing just one walk and four hits.
