Freshman Jared McGuire (Harwich, Mass.) drove in Boston College's lone run as the Eagle baseball squad dropped a 10-1 game to La Salle, Tuesday, in its final night of competition at the Homestead Challenge.
The Explorers sprinted to a quick start, scoring 10 runs on seven hits in their first three innings. La Salle produced two runs in the first inning on a pair of errant throws from BC defensemen. In their next offensive opportunity, La Salle's Rich Prall scored on Mike Essery's high chopper to right center. Then Scott Gehringer, who received Jake Marsello's (Lynn, Mass.) fourth walk of the night, came home on Ryan Parfit's fielder's choice. Gehringer fueled La Salle's next offensive wave by driving in two of La Salle's six runs in the third stanza.
BC received some much needed relief from freshman Kevin Boggan (Lexington, Mass.), who threw 4.1 innings, allowing no runs on two hits while compiling six K's in his first collegiate appearance with just one walk. Classmate Matt Meyer (Rochester, Minn.) struck out all three of the batters he faced. The third freshman to help BC's pitching cause was Nick Asselin (Bedford, N.H.), who faced four batters without surrendering a hit.
Gerard Breslin took home the mound victory for La Salle. He pitched 7.2 innings, giving up four hits and issuing two walks and three strikeouts. Brian Oakes and Mike Essery each picked up a pair of hits to lead the Explorers. La Salle was also aided by five BC defensive errors.
BC plays Valparaiso in Bradenton, Fla. on Thursday. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
