Charleston, S.C. - The Boston College softball team won a pair of games on the second day of the Charleston Southern Hampton Inn/Quality Suites Softball Invitational. After the final day of play, BC was 4-1 in the tournament. The Eagles are 8-7 overall.
BC topped Charleston Southern (5-4 in 9 innings) and Indiana-Fort Wayne (8-0 in 5 innings) on Sunday morning.
The Eagles opened the day with a 5-4 nine-inning win over Charleston Southern. After a back-and-forth battle for the duration, Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) smacked an RBI single to center field that scored Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) from third base. After Thompson was placed on second by virtue of the international tie-break rule, Elyse Meredith (Basking Ridge, N.J.) moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt, setting up the eventual game-winning hit by Field.
Meredith and Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) and Meredith each knocked in a run on the afternoon. Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Thompson picked up the win on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings of relief. She collected 10 strikeouts and scattered two hits.
In the second game, BC erupted for three runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take a comfortable lead. The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning to claim the 8-0 mercy-rule win. A sacrifice fly by Meredith and a two-run double by Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) accounted for the scoring. Thompson collected two RBI. Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) pitched the five-inning win.
The Eagles will remain in South Carolina for spring break, taking on Coastal Carolina (Tuesday), Charleston Southern (Wednesday), and Georgia Southern (Saturday) this week.
