The Boston College track and field teams started their season with a bang on Saturday afternoon, as both the men's and women's squads earned victories over Harvard at the Gordon Track & Tennis Center.
For the first time in coach Randy Thomas' 18 years with the men's track and field program, the Eagles defeated the Crimson, winning 70-68. Boston College won 10 of the meet's 17 events.
Senior co-captain Ashley Jefferson won both the 60-meter dash and the long jump, accounting for 10 of BC's 70 total points. Jefferson ran the 60 in 7.08 seconds and marked 6.65 meters in the long jump.
The Eagles had an impressive day from a trio of freshman, as Connor Farrell, Frank DiVittorio and Adam Moitoso all won individual events. Farrell edged out sophomore teammate Mark Alizzi in the mile, finishing with a time of 4:19.58. Alizzi was just a step behind in 4:19.78. DiVittorio won the 1,000-meters by more than three seconds, crossing the finish line in 2:30.81. Moitoso won the meet's longest event, running the 3,000-meters in 8:46.96.
In the last event of the day, the 4x800-meter relay, it was four freshmen that clinched the victory for Boston College. Farrell, DiVittorio, Patrick Mellea and Jeff Klatsky combined for a time of 7:54.29, nearly 10 seconds better than the Harvard squad.
Louis Canelli needed just one meet to qualify for the Big East Championship, as the sophomore won the long jump with a mark of 2.05 meters.
The women's team had an impressive performance as well, defeating the Crimson handily, 77-50. Eagle athletes won nine of 15 events on the afternoon.
Sophomore Kasey Hill and junior Jessica Fazekas both won multiple events for Boston College, and Hill placed in a third. The sophomore won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.72 seconds and also won the long jump with a mark of 5.27 meters. Fazekas won the shot put with a throw of 13.73 meters and also won the weight throw with a toss of 14.45 meters. Hill finished third in the shot put, marking 11.32 meters.
Cross country All-American Maria Cicero set an NCAA provisional time in the 5,000-meters, finishing in 16:39.52. Senior Megan Mara broke the pole vaulting record she set last year, marking 3.70 meters on her way to winning the event.
Freshman Mary Heitkamp won the 800-meters with a time of 2:17.34 and senior co-captain Melissa Sherman won the mile in 5:01.96.
The Eagles have more than a month before their next meet. The men will compete in the Boston University "All Corners" meet on January 15, while the women will head to a quad meet hosted by BU on January 18.
