With just 18 seconds remaining in regulation, Georgetown's Jeff Curtin beat Boston College goalkeeper Issey Maholo to tie the game at one and send the teams into overtime. Neither defense relented in the ensuing 20 minutes and the game ended in a tie - the first of the season for the Eagles.
Maholo, who has eight shutouts on the year, had gone more than 359 minutes without allowing a score. It was the first goal the four-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week had allowed in regulation since a September 19 loss to Villanova.
Defense was the name of the game once again for Boston College, which boasts the nation's fifth-leading goals against average. The No. 12 Eagles (10-3-1. 6-3-1) held the Hoyas (8-7-1, 4-4-1) to three shots on goal as sophomore Richard Gavilanes and senior co-captain Pat Haggerty held the conference's top-scoring offense in check.
The teams were scoreless until midway through the second half when sophomore Jarryd Goldberg scored on a corner kick in the 73rd minute. The goal was the first of the season for Goldberg and second of his career.
The tie marks the end of the BIG EAST schedule for Boston College. It finishes with 19 points and is currently second in the conference standings. The top four teams in the league will host BIG EAST tournament quarterfinal matches during the first weekend of November. The Eagles last qualified for the tournament in 2002, defeating the University of Connecticut in the championship game en route to an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
BC has three regular season games remaining and will play its final road contest of the year against cross-town rival Northeastern on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30.
