Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Four different Eagles scored goals, two of them short-handed, as second-ranked Boston College defeated Merrimack by a 4-0 score in front of 6,038 fans in Kelley Rink.
Senior Justin Dziama's breakaway goal at 4:37 of the first period put BC on top and captain Ben Eaves' short-handed tally at 8:31, set up by his brother Patrick, gave the Eagles an early insurance goal.
After a scoreless second period, Boston College again attacked short-handed when Tony Voce beat Merrimack goaltender Casey Guenther for his nation-leading 16th goal of the season at 4:05. Ty Hennes and Peter Harrold were credited with the assists. Freshman Adam Pineault potted his second goal of the year at 11:11 of the third, with assists from Brian Boyle and Dziama.
BC goaltender Matti Kaltiainen made 14 saves in getting his first shutout of the season and third of his career. Guenther made 37 saves in the loss.
Boston College (14-3-3, 7-1-2 Hockey East) will next face Boston University in a 7:00 p.m. tilt in Kelley Rink on January 16.
Game Notes: With their two short-handed goals tonight, the Eagles have now scored as many short-handed goals (eight) as they have allowed to the opposition's power play ... This was Justin Dziama's second career two-point game. The other came on January 11 of last year against UMass-Lowell ... Dziama became the 10th Eagle to score a game-winning goal this season ... Ty Hennes recorded his first point of the season with his assist in the third period.
