Powered by a strong foil squad, the Boston College men's fencing squad was 2-1 on Saturday, Jan. 24, beating MIT (15-12) and Brown (14-13) and losing to Brandeis (11-16). Senior Corban Rhodes (Canton, Ohio), returning to the lineup for the first time this season, emerged victorious in an impressive eight of his nine bouts. Fellow foilist Paul Taylor (Elm Grove, Wis.) won seven of his nine bouts. Junior Jon Tong (Wan Chai, Hong Kong) and Haynes Ko (Little Falls, N.J.) each went 5-4 in the epee and sabre divisions, respectively.
Despite improved results from the sabre squad, the women's team could not overcome the inexperience of its foil squad, and won only two of its five meets. The women defeated Tufts, 14-13 and Smith, 24-3, and fell to Brandeis (19-8), M.I.T. (15-12) and Brown (16-11). The Epee arsenal once again led the way, with Tiffany White (Irvington, N.J.) and Clara Yum (Wycoff, N.J.) going 9-6 and 8-4, respectively. In the sabre category, Jessica Peakes (Kansas City, Mo.)had one of the best days of her career, going 10-5 for the day.
Boston College faces four top-10 ranked teams: Penn State, Pennsylvania, Harvard and NYU among others in action at home and at Brandeis University, starting Saturday, Jan. 31.
