Boston College defensive tackle Tom Martin (Farmingdale, NJ) has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Martin led the BC defense in the Eagles' 27-14 victory at Penn State. The senior, who started his 27th consecutive game for the Eagles on Saturday, recorded his first career interception and returned it 25 yards to the Penn State one-yard-line, setting up BC's third score in the first quarter. He had five tackles, with one sack and three quarterback hurries as the Eagles held the Nittany Lions to their lowest point total at home since Oct. 6, 2001.
Miami quarterback Brock Berlin and Syracuse running back Walter Reyes have been named BIG EAST Offensive Players of the Week, the league announced, while Miami's Devin Hester and Johnnie Morant of Syracuse garnered Special Teams Player of the Week.
Berlin (Shreveport, La.) led Miami to the biggest comeback in school history in a 38-33 victory over Florida. The junior quarterback erased a 23-point third quarter deficit by connecting on 13 straight throws at one point as the Hurricanes scored 28 unanswered points to secure the win. He finished the game 27-of-41 for 340 yards and two touchdowns, establishing a career-high in yardage.
Reyes (Struthers, Ohio) rushed for a career-high 191 yards and three touchdowns in Syracuse's 49-47 triple-overtime win at North Carolina. The junior running back recorded 6.8 yards per carry on a career-best 28 attempts. He scored all of the Orangemen's points in the extra sessions, running for scores of 25 and five yards. He also provided the winning margin, converting SU's two-point conversion on the final touchdown. It was the fourth time in his career that Reyes has rushed for three touchdowns in a game.
Hester (Riviera Beach, Fla.) took the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown in the win over Florida. The freshman finished with two kick returns for 125 yards prior to leaving the game with an injury. The 97-yard scamper was the fifth-longest in UM history and longest by a Hurricane player in 25 years.
Morant (Parsippany, N.J.) accumulated 131 yards on four kickoff returns (32.8-yard average) in SU's victory over the Tar Heels. The senior had a long return of 52 yards that began the Syracuse comeback with the Orangemen trailing, 34-17. Morant amassed 291 all-purpose yards, the third-highest total on Syracuse's single-game list.
