Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker To Pittsburgh

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College volleyball (11-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) lost its most contested match of the season to Pittsburgh (11-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) 3-1 Sunday afternoon.
The second of BC's two conference matches this weekend, Pittsburgh came to Power Gym after beating Providence on Saturday in Rhode Island. The Eagles were soaring after a 3-2 defeat over West Virginia on Saturday as well. Both teams came on to the court anxious to grab another win.
BC was only able to take the win for game one, outscoring Pittsburgh 30-26. The Panthers took game two away from BC 30-21.
The third game was the most hotly contested of the afternoon. The Panthers, in pursuit of the win, could not shake BC from their heels. Serve after serve the Eagles would match each point and drove the score up to 34-32 before losing. Head coach of Pittsburgh Chris Beerman received a yellow warning card for arguing with officials.
The Eagles kept up during the final game of the match, but were unable to stay on top at the very end. Taking the lead briefly halfway through, they were defeated 30-26, giving Pitt nine points on attack errors during the final game.
Alison Shepp made some big plays for the Eagles on offense. The middle blocker and right side from Shaumburg, Ill., made 23 kills out of 41 attempts. Allison Anderson hit .409 from the outside, and also made 11 defensive digs. Morgan Woodcock had two service aces, and came up to the net with Dorota Niemczewska for a pair of block assists.
Katie Andersen made her primary impact on defense, with 10 digs. The junior did record two solo blocks and two block assists.
The Eagles kept Pittsburgh hitting .233 throughout the match, while Wendy Hatlestad led the panthers on offense with 19 kills.
Boston College will return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. in Blacksburg, Virginia to face Virginia Tech.
